Each Blue Book health check is designed to assess your child's development and address any concerns you may have. Below you will find detailed information about what to expect at each visit.
At this visit, your doctor or child and family health nurse will conduct a full physical baby health check. This includes measuring weight, length and head circumference, with all results recorded in the Blue Book.
This is an ideal time to discuss any feeding, growth or developmental concerns about your newborn. We also encourage you to share how you are feeling as new parents so we can address any worries or provide additional support if needed.
It is important for mothers to book a postnatal check with their GP at this time. If you prefer a female doctor, please book with Dr Denise Huang or Dr Sharmila Kumar. Our reception staff can guide you to a GP who speaks your preferred language.
Your baby will receive a comprehensive physical examination covering the fontanelles, eye red reflex, mouth, skin, lungs, umbilical area, genitals, hips and heart. Weight, length, head circumference and developmental milestones are recorded in the Blue Book and plotted on growth charts.
Our experienced nurse immuniser will administer your baby's vaccinations according to the immunisation schedule. We thoroughly discuss side effects to give you confidence in post-vaccination care.
At this check, we conduct the routine baby health assessment including weight, length, head circumference and developmental milestones. All measurements are recorded in the Blue Book and plotted on growth charts.
Our experienced nurse immuniser will administer vaccinations according to the immunisation schedule. You will also receive written information about introducing solids to prepare you for commencing solid food at six months.
This check includes a thorough assessment of your baby's development, covering behaviour, movement, seeing, hearing and communication skills. At this stage, your child may begin teething, and our staff will discuss strategies to relieve any discomfort.
You will receive education and written information about introducing solids so your baby can experience new tastes and textures. This variety helps develop teeth, jaw and language skills. Weight, length, head circumference and developmental milestones are recorded in the Blue Book. Six month vaccinations will be administered as scheduled.
At this stage, your child is communicating in many ways through waving, pointing and attempting to talk. Your baby might be standing or even walking. We assess your child's development and record weight, length, head circumference and milestones in the Blue Book.
Vaccinations will be administered according to schedule. We can discuss any concerns or myths you may have heard about the 12 month injections and thoroughly explain the potential side effects of these vaccinations.
Your child is now becoming more independent, helping when getting dressed, showing new emotions like frustration and displaying early signs of toilet training readiness. If your child is a fussy eater, we can suggest techniques to guide you through this phase.
We assess your child's development and record weight, length, head circumference and milestones in the Blue Book. Vaccinations will be administered according to the Australian Immunisation Schedule.
During this visit, your doctor or nurse will check your child's weight and height, calculate body mass index (BMI) and plot measurements on growth charts. Growth is typically slow and steady during the preschool years.
Your child should be eating three meals and two nutritious snacks daily. Even if your child is a picky eater, continue offering a variety of healthy foods. Preschoolers generally sleep about 11 to 12 hours per day, and most children this age still take a daytime nap. During this health check, you can discuss any concerns with our staff.
The Australian Government recommends all children receive a health check before starting school. Parents or carers receiving income support and Family Tax Benefit Part A need to ensure their four year old completes this assessment.
Book with our child and family health nurse for a comprehensive 4 year health assessment, which includes a vision check similar to the STEPS programme conducted at preschool. Your doctor or nurse will check weight, height and BMI, plotting measurements on growth charts. Vaccinations will be administered according to the Australian Immunisation Schedule, with side effects discussed.
Keeping your child protected with safe, professionally administered immunisations
Our doctors and immunisation nurses administer all vaccinations with two qualified staff members present, ensuring the utmost safety of your child at all times.
We can discuss additional vaccinations available to help protect your child beyond the National Immunisation Program, including travel vaccinations, flu vaccinations and Meningococcal B. For the complete NSW Immunisation Schedule, visit the NSW Health website.
