Planning for Pregnancy
Pre-Pregnancy Blood Tests and Health Optimisation

Pregnancy is one of the most significant events in a woman's life. Proper preparation can help ensure the best possible outcomes for both mother and baby. Did you know there is a set of recommended blood tests before pregnancy?

These tests are designed to optimise your health before conception and ensure you have adequate immunity against viral illnesses. Certain infections during pregnancy can cause congenital abnormalities in the developing baby, so having the right protection in place is essential.

Our doctors can guide you through the recommended pre-pregnancy screening and help you understand your results. This proactive approach to women's health sets the foundation for a healthy pregnancy. We also offer health assessments to ensure you are in the best possible condition before trying to conceive.

Reproductive Carrier Screening

Genetic testing options for healthy couples planning a family

Reproductive carrier screening (RCS) is available for healthy couples who are planning a pregnancy. This testing identifies whether you carry genes for certain inherited conditions, including cystic fibrosis, fragile X syndrome, and spinal muscular atrophy.

Many people assume that having no family history of these conditions means they cannot be carriers. However, carriers often have no symptoms and no known family history. Learning about your carrier status before pregnancy allows you to make informed decisions about your family planning.

Speak with our general practitioners to learn more about reproductive carrier screening and whether it may be right for you.

GP Shared Antenatal Care
Convenient Pregnancy Care Close to Home

If you plan to deliver at a public hospital such as Royal North Shore Hospital or Hornsby Hospital, our doctors can provide GP shared antenatal care. All our practitioners are registered to participate in this program.

GP shared care means that approximately half of your pregnancy visits can take place at The Madison Medical Practice Hornsby, at a day and time that suits your schedule. This reduces the number of hospital appointments you need to attend while still ensuring you receive high quality care throughout your pregnancy.

During your visits, we use a portable ultrasound scanner to visualise your baby. While this is not a formal diagnostic scan and cannot detect abnormalities, it allows you to see your developing baby during your appointments. We can email the images to you upon request.

To book your antenatal appointments, please book an appointment with one of our experienced health professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy Care

Pre-pregnancy blood tests typically include screening for immunity to rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, and HIV. They also check iron levels, blood group, and general health markers. These tests help identify any concerns that should be addressed before conception. Book a health assessment to discuss your pre-pregnancy screening needs.

GP shared antenatal care is a program where your pregnancy visits are shared between your GP and the hospital where you plan to deliver. At The Madison Medical Practice, approximately half of your appointments can be completed at our Hornsby clinic, providing convenience while maintaining quality care throughout your pregnancy.

You do not need a referral to book an appointment for pregnancy care at our practice. Simply book an appointment with one of our GPs to begin your antenatal care journey.

Reproductive carrier screening tests whether you carry genes for inherited conditions such as cystic fibrosis, fragile X syndrome, and spinal muscular atrophy. Even without a family history, you may still be a carrier. Learn more about reproductive carrier screening and discuss your options with our doctors.

The portable ultrasound used during your pregnancy visits is not a formal diagnostic scan. It allows you to see your baby but cannot detect abnormalities. You will still require formal ultrasound scans at an accredited imaging centre as part of your antenatal care plan.
