Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Early detection through regular skin checks can save your life. Book your skin examination with our experienced doctors today.
Two in three Australians will receive a skin cancer diagnosis by the age of 70. Sadly, more than 2,000 people die from skin cancer each year in Australia. These statistics make our country the skin cancer capital of the world.
However, there is good news. Skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, and it is never too late to start protecting yourself. Regular health assessments that include skin examinations play a vital role in catching problems early, when treatment is most effective.
Our health professionals at Madison Medical Practice are trained to identify suspicious spots and changes in your skin. Whether you have fair skin, a history of sunburn, or simply want peace of mind, booking a skin check is a proactive step towards better health.
Sun protection is essential whenever the UV level reaches 3 or higher. Follow these simple steps to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation.
Slip on clothing that covers your shoulders, arms and legs. Choose fabrics with a tight weave for better protection.
Slop on SPF 30+ or higher water-resistant sunscreen. Apply generously 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours.
Slap on a broad-brimmed hat that protects your ears, face and neck. Baseball caps do not provide adequate protection.
Seek shade whenever possible, especially during peak UV times between 10am and 3pm. Use trees, umbrellas or shelters.
Slide on sunglasses that meet Australian Standard AS1067. Look for close-fitting, wraparound styles for best protection.
Schedule regular skin checks with your doctor. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes for skin cancer.
Regular self-examination helps you spot changes early between professional skin checks.
Being aware of your skin is essential for early detection. The Cancer Council Australia recommends checking your skin regularly and visiting a doctor if you notice any changes.
In a room with good lighting, completely undress and use a mirror to check your whole body. Remember to examine areas not exposed to the sun, including between your toes, on your scalp, and under your arms.
Look for spots that appear different from others on your skin. Watch for changes in size, shape, colour, or texture. Any spot that does not heal, or that itches or bleeds, should be examined by a general practitioner.
Have any questions?
When examining your skin, look for the ABCDE signs: Asymmetry (one half differs from the other), Border irregularity (edges are ragged or blurred), Colour variation (multiple shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue), Diameter larger than 6mm, and Evolution (any change in size, shape, or colour over time). If you notice any of these signs, book an appointment with one of our doctors promptly.
The frequency of skin checks depends on your individual risk factors. If you have fair skin, a history of sunburn, many moles, or a family history of skin cancer, annual checks are recommended. Our health professionals can advise you on the appropriate schedule based on your personal risk profile.
Your out-of-pocket fee for skin excision does not change depending on the diagnosis, including melanomas. All skin excision procedures at Madison Medical Practice carry an out-of-pocket fee of $90. For more information about our fees, please contact our reception team.
If your doctor identifies a suspicious spot, they will discuss the next steps with you. This may include monitoring the spot, performing a biopsy, or arranging excision. Your doctor will explain all options and ensure you understand the process. Results will be communicated according to our practice policies.
